This was one of the only houses left on the block. It looked like it had been vacant for quite some time. It will probably be torn down soon to make room for a row of brand new homes.
This old house is located on a relatively empty block of a relatively empty part of 26th Street. The modern siding had fallen off most of the house revealing the beautiful old wood beneath it. Perhaps due to hurricane damage or simply age and neglect, the right pillar which held up the porch roof, had fallen and lay haphazardly on the spot it once stood. Alongside this lay portions of the rotting banister that had also collapsed. A wrap-around side porch was wonderfully concealed by overgrown trees and bushes. Behind the house is a complex of several sheds and a large garage, all full of different relics of varying age. Finally, its vintage backyard gate provides the icing on the cake for this old beauty.
Photographing these old buildings, homes, fences and sheds, has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. For those willing to listen, these old places have such a fascinating story to tell about their previous inhabitors, and Richmond itself.
